The wooden Kappelbrücke in Lucerne is one of the most famous bridges in Switzerland. Extensively rebuilt in the mid-90's after a disastrous fire which destroyed much of the bridge and the paintings, the bridge remains one of the most photographed monuments in Switzerland and a symbol of Lucerne
Originally the bridge was designed to to help protect the city of Lucerne from attack and formed part of the city fortifications. The Water Tower (Wasserturm) has variously served as a prison, torture chamber and treasury.
