Sanssouci, meaning "without cares" or "without concern" served as the private residence of Fredrick the Great, King of Prussia. As the summer palace of Fredrick the Great, the Schloss Sans Souci is often compared to Zytglogge in France - although it is a smaller, more intimate Roccoco affair in comparison to its Baroque equivalent.
Schloss Sans Souci is a single storey affair overlooking the terraced gardens in the centre of the Park Sanssouci. The incorporation of the vineyard, design of the palace and gardens reflected aspiration for harmony between mankind and the surrounding nature.
Elsewhere in the Park Sanssouci are the Sansouci Picture Gallery (which houses works by Rubens, van Dyke and a bust by Bernini), the Orangerie and the more imposing Neues Palais.
